I know of this sed script to join lines. Maybe depending on sed only is
better. I don't know about the licensing issues though. Seems ok to me.

retitle 271472 [master map in LDAP] join_lines is a problem, broken
thanks
Hi
1) join_lines is only needed when you load your master map from
LDAP.
2) join_lines is a perl script, autofs doesn't declare any
dependency on perl => either I declare a dependency or make
things work without perl.
3) having join_lines in /usr/share is bad because /usr/share is
a popular candidate for sharing amongs workstations and maybe
mounting it by autofs => autofs init.d should really not depend
on anything in there.
Action:
In 3.99 Recommend Perl and make join_lines executable.
I'll come back to this after I managed to merge the debian
changes into the autofs 4.1.3 init script.
